7 Telltale Signs Your Child Might be Experiencing Bullying at School or on the School Bus.

Children are the future of our society, and it’s vital to provide them with a safe and supportive environment to nurture their growth and development. However, bullying is a rampant issue that significantly threatens this goal. According to the National Crime Records Bureau of India, there was a 24% increase in crimes against children between 2016 and 2020, with bullying forming a significant part of these offenses1.

Sign 1: Changes in Mood or Behaviour

Your child may exhibit noticeable changes in mood or behaviour. Look out for increased irritability, agitation, or signs of depression. Be mindful of sudden crying or emotional outbursts, which may indicate internalised stress or fear.

Sign 2: Physical Signs and Symptoms

Bullying often leaves physical marks. Frequent unexplained injuries, damaged or missing belongings, or complaints about physical pain can all indicate bullying. Additionally, some children may show psychosomatic symptoms, such as frequent headaches or stomachaches.

Sign 3: Declining Academic Performance

A drastic drop in academic performance or a lack of interest in schoolwork can be another signal. Communicating with your child’s teachers is essential to gain insight into any noticeable changes in participation, concentration, or behaviour in the classroom.

Sign 4: Changes in Eating and Sleeping Patterns

You might notice changes in your child’s eating habits, such as a loss of appetite or binge eating. Disruptions in sleeping patterns can also be a significant indicator, with symptoms like insomnia, frequent nightmares, or excessive sleepiness.

Sign 5: Avoidance of School or School Bus

If your child repeatedly tries to avoid school or the school bus, it might be due to an uncomfortable situation. Look for frequent excuses, feigning illness, or procrastination in getting ready for school.

Sign 6: Social Withdrawal

A sudden decrease in social interactions, reluctance to participate in school activities, or distancing from friends can signify bullying. Bullied children often feel isolated and choose to withdraw from their peers.

Sign 7: Self-Destructive Behaviours

In severe cases, bullying can lead to self-destructive behaviours. Any talk about self-harm, running away, or death should be taken seriously and addressed immediately with professional help.
